EMG

EMG (electromyography) is the measurement of electrical properties of muscles, nerves and nerve roots.

Why Is EMG Made?

EMG can be used to make a diagnosis, to make a differential diagnosis, to guide the treatment to be done. Numbness in the fingers of the hand is a very common complaint. Why does your doctor ask for an EMG review when you apply for this complaint?

To diagnose; it helps to understand if there is a disease. 'Does the patient have these complaints because of a nerve compression in the wrist canal?''Is there a compression at elbow level?''Could it be due to a hernia of the neck?"it is an auxiliary test in the" diagnosis and differential diagnosis " stage in finding answers to your questions.

It can be used to decide on the treatment of an existing disease. If a nerve compression is detected in the wrist canal in the patient, it shows the direction in deciding on medical or surgical treatment by determining the degree to which the nerve is stuck, the degree of destruction in the nerve. Because some diseases, such as diabetes, kidney failure, can also lead to these complaints, the course of the disease can be monitored by measuring at certain intervals whether these diseases damage the nerves.

Some Diseases For Which EMG Examination Is Required

  • Nerve injuries (firearm injury, stabbing, post-injection)
  • Nerve compression (nerve compression in the wrist and elbow)
  • Back and neck hernias
  • Facial paralysis
  • Measuring the effects of diseases that disrupt the function of nerves (such as metabolic diseases, diabetes, kidney disease)
  • Diagnosis of novelistic diseases
  • Spinal cord diseases caused by novelization
  • Nerve injuries that may occur in infants during childbirth

How Is EMG Made?

EMG inspection is done in two parts:

  • Measurement of nerve conduction
  • Examination of muscles.

According to the diagnosis considered in the patient, both or only one of them can be made. It takes between 15 minutes and 1 hour, depending on the nerves to be examined and the condition of the diseases.

Nerve Conduction Measurement

Some nerves are selected by your doctor, who will perform an examination on the arm, leg, or other body parts. It is stimulated by giving an electric current through an electrode placed on the skin. The given electric current lasts less than one thousandth of a second and is harmless. This creates a feeling that is unpleasant where the electric current is given, but this feeling is usually not perceived as pain. Activity radiated in the nerve is recorded with another electrode. Using this recording, it is measured whether the nerve transmits the stimulus, the rate of transmission, and the degree of response generated by the stimulus. During an EMG examination, measurements are usually made from 5 to 10 nerves.

Examination of Muscles

Electrical activity in the muscle is examined by placing a needle-shaped electrode in a novelized muscle in the arm, leg or other body parts.

This needle is different from normal injector needles;

It is thin and specially manufactured needles. Electricity or medication is not given with this needle, data of the muscles during rest and contraction are recorded. Needles are disposable, each patient uses a new needle. Examination of each muscle takes a few minutes, during which time the needle is held inside the novelization muscle. These procedures are usually painless or create pain of a tolerably mild severity.

Novos Novos the number of muscles that need to be examined in an EMG examination varies according to the diagnosis that is considered;

Usually a number of muscles between 1 and 10 are examined. Only the examination of the side of the complaint, only the conducting of nerve transmissions, is an incomplete examination. Measurements of both arms or both legs should be made to see and compare the patient's own normal values. For this reason, all EMG examinations deemed necessary are carried out in our center based on the examination findings of the physician who wants to be examined, the findings in other examinations and the diagnoses considered in the patient. EMG can also be done by technicians trained in EMG. However, in our center, all procedures are performed by the relevant specialist physician and the result is reported and delivered at the same time.

Preparations To Be Made Before The EMG Audit

You must be full during the examination.

During the examination, your arms should be extended above the elbow and your legs to the knee. For this reason, we recommend wearing loose clothes with Trotters and sleeves.

Especially jewelry on the arms and fingers, such as rings, bracelets, should be removed.

Because the electrical conductivity of your skin is important in the procedures to be done, it is important that you do not apply cream to your skin and that your skin is not dusty, oily, dirty.

We ask you to come half an hour before the appointment time given to you. The procedures of the patient before you may take longer than expected, in some cases you may need to wait about half an hour. Considering that the examination may also take half an hour, we recommend that you come by planning to spend 1-1.5 hours for the EMG examination. If you want a relative to be in the room during the examination, you don't mind, you may feel more comfortable if a relative who can support you comes.
