Unilateral Biportal endoscopy (UBE) is an arthroscopic approach to the spine. All kind of operations that have been performing with open surgery with the support of microscope, can alsobe performed with this method (closed) only through two 1 cm holes. The ube technique allows for a much less traumatic surgery using advanced image systems that allow 30 times tissue magnification. We have a chance to apply endoscopic spine surgery (closed) in all spinal diseases except for large fractures and large humps. In particular, it is a method that we often prefer in lumbar hernia, back hernia, neck hernia, neck, back and lumbar spinal canal strictures. We do this only by intervening in the damaged area and minimizing the damage that can occur in the surrounding tissues, muscles and skin. After the operation, the patient's comfort is quite good. Neck pain is less common. Because the muscles are not damaged, the patient also has no complaints, such as muscle pain. Our patients can return to their daily lives in a very short time (1-4 weeks) with this surgical method. One of the most important points to note is that the patient maintains a straight spine position and acts as recommended by the doctor.
The advantages of this technique compared to microsurgery (open) are also quite large.
Less tissue trauma
Reduced risk of blood loss and infection
Reduced risk of complications
Less scar tissue formation (fibrosis)
Fewer painkillers needed
Reduced recovery time
Failure to cause instability
During the Covid-19 process, spinal endoscopy became our most reliable weapon for situations requiring emergency surgery. COVID-19 increased the risk of transmission, as open surgical procedures inevitably extended the duration of hospitalization, especially in mandatory cases with elderly and companion diseases. However, we have used the advantages of endoscopic surgery to allow our patients to be discharged in a short time (within 12 hours). In this way, in our patients, where waiting is a risk, we performed surgery even during intense periods of the pandemic and did not encounter any problems.
